30 places available.

Key dates

Deadline for applications - 09 June

Workshop dates - 19-23 October

About this opportunity

The British Council in Spain in collaboration with the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) is organising a series of scientific workshops to provide opportunities for researchers from the UK and Spain to meet face-to-face for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and information on priority topics and to explore future areas of research and collaboration. 30 places are available.

The workshop will consist of 10 keynote presentations of 30min each (4 from Spanish researchers, 5 from British researchers and 1 from a French researcher) and 15min presentations from the rest of the participants who will be early career researchers (10 from the UK and 10 from Spain) selected from those applying. The language for all presentations will be English.

Keynote speakers:

  • Dr José E. Belda  (Koppert España) Biological control of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in greenhouse vegetables
  • Dr John P. Carr (University of Cambridge) Effects of a virus and its gene products on plant-vector interactions
  • Prof. John Colvin (Coordinator) (NRI, University of Greenwich) Cassava whitefly species and the spread of plant-disease epidemics
  • Prof. Alberto Fereres  (Instituto de Ciencias Agrarias, CSIC) Virus infection alters the alighting, settling and feeding preferences of Bemisia tabaci
  • Dr Maruthi Gowda (NRI, University of Greenwich) Cassava brown streak disease epidemic in Africa - current status and control
  • Dr Jean-Michel Lett (CIRAD - La Réunion) Epidemiology, diversity and evolution through recombination of emergent begomoviruses
  • Dr Juan José López-Moya (Centro de Investigación en Agrigenómica, IRTA-CSIC-UAB-UB) Cucumber vein yellowing virus and Sweet potato mild mottle virus, two ipomoviruses differing in genome structure and transmissibility by whiteflies
  • Dr Jesús Navas-Castillo (Coordinator) (IHSM-UMA-CSIC) Tripartite interactions between plant viruses, whiteflies and endosymbionts
  • Dr Stephen Parnell (Rothamsted Research Centre) Sampling and surveillance for emerging plant diseases: insights from epidemiological modelling
  • Dr Susan E. Seal (NRI, University of Greenwich) Studies on Bemisia tabaci transcriptome and genome data aiming to identify potential targets for control strategies

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to early career researchers based in the UK and Spain, as defined as having completed a PhD no more than 10 year ago, from fields relevant to the title of the workshop.
